How to Keep Your Kids Safe During COVID-19

Keep Your Kids Safe During COVID-19

Keeping kids safe is a parent’s top priority, even more so during the COVID-19 outbreak. If you’re a parent or caregiver to a child or teenager, remaining informed so that you can guide your kids through these unprecedented changes can and will keep them safe and help soothe their worries or fears.

Wash Your Hands

Teaching your kids how to maintain good hygiene is incredibly important at all times, but especially right now. Even if you think you and your kids have mastered your hygiene, it doesn’t hurt to refresh your memory a bit. Remind your kids to wash their hands frequently and thoroughly to avoid contracting unwanted germs before meals, after they use the bathroom, after they blow their nose, cough, or play outside, while practicing social distancing of course. If washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is not an option for your household, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to stop pesky germs from spreading.

Prevent Virus Spreading and Reduce the Curve

It’s also important to help kids understand not to touch their face, as the virus can quickly spread through the eyes, nose, and mouth. Practice not touching your face and social distancing at home first and be sure to praise your kids and acknowledge their efforts when they follow suit. It may be hard for small children to understand why they cannot play with their friends, but you can encourage alternatives like video chats and phone calls with friends, and assure them that these changes are only temporary. Get creative!

Sanitize Surfaces

Clean frequently touched surfaces to prevent the germs from spreading, especially hard surfaces as the virus lives longer on these types of surfaces: Doorknobs, light switches, kitchen and bathroom countertops, toys, keyboards, cellphones, glasses, shoes, and touchscreens.
